Actually, most of the time, I've been working on a study course I designed so that I can both review over things I've learned as well as re-learning things I messed up on way back when!  Subjects I'm tackling include a study of my religion, Science (plants this time), A brief (VERY brief) intro to archaeology, Mathematics (OK - so I'm doing a review of basic math - sue me!  Working my way up to calculus and analytical geometry), Russian (Mandarin is temporarily on hold), Creative writing, re working my handwriting which has gotten SLOPPY!, Spelling (don't even go there!) and VERY lite course in basic art - VERY basic!  Music - I will probably work on (as well as art) as I journey through the ages - PLUS I will work on it A LOT when I eventually re-purchase a piano - which I miss dreadfully!  I miss Beethoven's sonatas, Rachmaninoff's Concertos and Chopin's Fantasia like crazy!  And recordings do NOT do the trick!

Dilly pickles!!!!!

Some people just LOVE sweet things.  I eat sweet things when offered - and in fact, don't dare make cookies, cakes or pies - because I will inhale them.  Mostly because they're THERE - and that's what you do - eat them, that is - not inhale them!

But what I REALLY love, crave to the point that I resemble Pavlov's dogs, are PICKLES!!!!  ALL kinds of pickles - quick lime pickles, bread and butter sweet pickles - but MOST especially DILL pickles!  and really have to pace myself on this or I will eat them until I'm sick!

A friend (Judy L.) is putting up pickled beets - which is bad enough since it got me to truly craving pickles again!  Then she asked what about carrots!  I LOVE dilly carrots!  Esp. if they have a bit of fire in them!  And Green beans - OH MY!  Pickled okra I haven't tried - YET - but I saw some jars in the grocers and how I made it out of there without them, I'll never know!

So - I live in MA - and there is a LOT of snow on the ground - and my carrot crop last year was virtually non-existent.  What's a girl to do?

Answer is simple - GO TO THE STORE!  Admittedly it's just not quite the same as when you raise your own - but it's at least better than none!

So - guess what I'm going to do today!!!!!  (Dilly carrots - here I come!)  And hopefully I'll have enough left to put up on the shelves to last me until I actually have home grown ones!

STILL hope to finish tonight............

Still hope to finish tonight - BUT it will still appear on this coming week's list!  (I did correct the one post about the flimsy finish - did NOT count that in this week's stash - will go on the next one!  With added borders!)

Binding cut, pressed - needs to go on - probably finishing up in front of the DVD player

Mini Twister - needs FMQ quilting - This one is SCARY for me - first project on this to be done!  VERY slowly and carefully

Scrap Basket Blues - this quilt needs 2 more borders (a skinny white stripe and a WIDE blue stripe!) to be flimsy ready - will NOT be fnished tonight since I don't have ANY dark blues!  Will be Tuesday before that happens!

What's Cookin'???? - Week 6 It's Key Lime Pie!!!

Key Lime Pie is cookin'!!!  That's what!

The original recipe came from Allrecipes.com which I dearly love!  Another thing I dearly love is Judy's Wha'cha Cookin links!  which is why I am posting this (and linking to her website)

Here in MA we can get Key Lime juice - which is hard if not next to impossible to get in IL.
And this recipe is SOOOOOO easy!

1 (9 inch) graham cracker crust

3 C sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup sour cream
3/4 cup key lime juice
a little bit of grated lime rind, if you've got it!

Mix all together, pour into the pie crust.  Bake 350 for about 8 minutes (DO NOT BROWN).  Chill until cold (that's when it really thickens up!) Serve!

...................................

Oh this is sooooooooooo good!  While I really wanted whipped cream and key lime slices to make it look pretty - I honestly didn't miss it!

The only thing is - while I DID bake it for 8 minutes - I think that I need an oven thermometer - and it could have stayed in just a tad longer!  Nevertheless - it was HARD to wait until it cooled!

Week 7 will be Berries!
Week 8 will be Cinnamon!

Stash Report for week 7

I was a good girl!  NOTHING added this week!  (Woohoo!)

Of course, also nothing completed - several almosts - but not completed.  Hope to finish today though!

Forgot - the flimsy I was GOING to report - still needs another 2 borders! It wasn't big enough! Drat it anyway!  On the schedule for this week.

02-17-13 Used This Week:0 yard
Used This Month: 0 yard for February
Used Year to Date:0.25 yards

Added This Week: 13.91 yards

And It's a............. FLIMSY FINISH!!!!! Uh Oh!!!

(SEE NOTE AT END!!! drat it anyway!!!)
......................................................................................
I asked at the quilt shop and everyone there thought that I did NOT need another border - so - it's a FLIMSY FINISH!!!!  And that's one off of my February list and off of this week's quilt projects!

The Pattern is Scrap Basket Blues and was created by Kim Brackett and is one of 18 Jelly Roll friendly patterns in her book Scrap Basket Surprises.

Yardage all told involved 32 strips of 2.5 x 42 assorted blues, 20 strips of 2.5 x 42 whites.  I did add a red border 2.5 strips (I think it was 8 strips I cut but the amount used is actually less than that by the time I got done.

.....................................................
OK - HERE'S THE END NOTE!!!!
You know the old true saying - Measure Twice, cut once?  Well, I measured - but unfortunately I seem to need a course in how to measure!  Width of the quilt is SUPPOSED to be 55"x 65" Minimum.  Wherever I read that it can be 45 x 55 was soooooooooo wrong!!!!  Anyway - the quilt is NOT done!  It will have 2 additional borders - which SHOULD bring it to slightly over the minimum required!

Young adult fantasy
The Circle Opens: Street Magic by Tamora Pierce  I've read this a gazillion times - and still have times when I just want to feel caught up in the book!

Romance

Katherine's Marriage - DE Stevenson - have read this several times - love her books  ALMOST done
The Empty World - DE Stevenson - This is the first time I've read this - I did NOT like it! It wasn't her usual style and was SUPPOSED to be futuristic.  At the time it was written - that was probably true - (1930's)  But now that we ARE in THAT future - it is so far off base and I REALLY don't like it!

 CURRENT READS:

Science Fiction
Winter Witch by Elaine Cunningham

Other books
The Zenith by Duong Thu Huong I don't really read this straight through - but I am definitely liking this book!

The Spoiler: a novel by Annalena McAfee I didn't get to this one this last week.

The Heat of the Sun by David Rain  The Scope here is from 1920s to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.   I'm not too far from finishing this.

Other Genre:
Havah - I love this book
He Who Lifts the Skies ( temporarily on hold)
Non-fiction
Encyclopedia of Country Living -by Carla Emery - love this!  Re-read Oddments section as well as the Tree, Vine, Bush section.

LOL - have been checking out new garden catalogs - to see if there is anything I HAVEN'T ordered!  So far I probably have something of every kind of veggie - LOL - whether I like it or not!

Christmas Ribbons - doubt I will get to this this week.
SEWING
Sewing - the Sunday project that didn't!  (finish blouses, work on slacks)

Stash Report - Week 6 for 02-10-11 OR Oy vey! Am I in Trouble!

Yup!  I'm Definitely in trouble!

Last week (Thursday - the 7th) I decided to head for the quilt shop!  goal was to purchase several small FQ for my dd who has sent me MANY MANY FQ over the last year and before, and to purchase ONE SMALL piece of fabric for the Mystery Quilt Judy is doing.  Yup - that was the goal!  So - I took all the things I had questions about with me - the possible binding for the placemats as well as the placemats because I wanted a second - or 3rd opinion!  I also took the POSSIBLE fabrics for the mystery quilt - one which I wanted to definitely use (IF I had enough - tape measure had vanished AGAIN!!!!).

The quilt shop was REALLY busy - and so I'm VERY thankful that Maureen was able to wait on me!

I quickly found several FQ that would be ideal and got those.  I did NOT have enough of the fabric I wanted for binding - and there wasn't any more of that - so I got some different fabric.

So far so good!

Then we came to the Mystery quilt.  After trying this fabric and that fabric and going back and forth (and turning Maureen's hair gray in the process), while letting M. have a bit of a breather by her helping other customers as they would finish, since my mind wasn't made up, I ended with only one out of all 6 fabrics being used.  I knew I would need more background since I don't purchase 4.0 yards of anything unless really needed.  And I knew I would have to get 4.0 yards of one of the main fabrics - but OH MY!  I will say this - I LOVE the fabrics that we chose!  (almost completely a different color scheme from what I was going to use!)
The only fabric I am using from the original group is the red floral (3rd from the left) - the rest are all new! (4th you can hardly see - and is a glorious rusty cinnamon brown, 5th is a dark beige with red motif and 6th - the highlight fabric - is the green!)

And What's on YOUR needles????

This is my show and tell linked to Judy Laquidara's Patchwork Times

My needles FINALLY arrived in their box - Wednesday!  So - Wednesday Evening I finally had a chance to see what I remembered re "how to knit".

LOL - I quickly discovered several things.... I have a BIG problem counting stitches that are already stitched!  I also remember how to (1) add stitches without noticing (I went from 20 to 21 stitches - NO idea where I picked up the extra stitch!), (2) drop stitches without noticing it (I went back to 20 several rows later!), (3) how to add a BUNCH of stitches in short order - still without noticing! (2 rows fine - which was at the earlier 20 stitches - then suddenly I was at 27 stitches - STILL no idea how!), (4)what happens when you put the knitting down for a few minutes (I was thirsty), then pick it up and start knitting again (I apparently turned everything around and was going back the same way I came!), (5) what happens when you can't remember which hand you were doing what with!

HOWEVER - all that being said (since this is for me, I am NOT taking this out again!), my strangely warped neck scarf is now withing 3 inches of being done! which means that I will learn a new skill - ie, binding it off!

BTW - the NEXT project - I'm not sure WHAT it will be!  Socks?????

Leader Ender's - Bonnie's Bow-dacious

MENU

  • English Muffins, cream cheese and jelly, cottage cheese, tea
  • Fruit salad, Crackers and cheese (gorgonzola - yum!), tea (ginger)
  • Spinach salad, Peanut Butter Chili Pie (ok - I'm going to try it!), fruit (pears???), tea

What's Cookin'???

Oh Yum - I just saw Judy L's salad over on PatchworkTimes.com site - VERY yummy!

I seriously thought of posting my favorite peanut butter cookie recipe but thought in terms of my weight that I had best not! (Cookie Monster and I have something in common!)

Then I thought of Peanut Butter Pie - and OH MY there are some to die for on Allrecipes.com!  About that point I glanced up at the "bulletin board" near my computer desk - and saw the NO DESSERT sign I posted there!  That is - fruit is wonderful - but pies, cakes, cookies - OH MY - not on the list of good things to eat - at least, not yet!  Maybe if and when I learn some self control and try not to inhale the whole thing at once!

Besides SWEET is NOT my favorite flavour!  (Dill is, but that's another story!)

Anyway - over on the All Recipes site - I spotted a Peanut Butter Chili Pie recipe - AND it was rated a 5 star!!!!  Which means it probably is pretty darned good!

Because this is someone else's recipe - not my own - and not my own variation - I'm going to give the addy for it.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Peanut-Butter-Chili-Pie/Detail.aspx

Picture - once I make it (tonight's dinner!) - will be mine, however - along with the comments on it!

The Spoiler: a novel by Annalena McAfee So far quite good!  It isn't exactly my usual cup of tea - but I do like it!  A novel covering "every major theater of war in the 20th century" as written about, discussed, which was published by a newsroom "Marlene Dietrich" and confronted by an expose from a "bright young thing" out to make a name for herself.

Stash Report - Week 5 - 02-03-13

Again - not a lot of much - at least re quilting is concerned!  Now if we were talking about MASSAGE for my messed up arm - oh yeah - the lady worked HARD on that arm for 45 minutes!  AND I can actually have freedom of movement for it!  YAY!

(Now to get her to work on the lower back - the one that keeps waking me up at night!!!!)

Also - Last Sunday was our Quilt a Quarter class - aka Runnermania - and we started a new series of runners.  Mine was involved with using up a whole bunch of odd and end Valentine blocks I had gotten in a swap maybe 10 years ago!  Didn't finish it - but sure am closer!

Now if we had talked about OTHER stuff - I could have included the discovery of a small shop that teaches lessons in ALL kinds of fabric arts - including spinning and weaving.

OR I could talk about getting my hair done and my tri or quart- color is now a single (or almost) color again - AND I have bangs once more - along with a long shag!  Love it!  AND love the brows as well as my nails (including the 2 I gnawed half off in my sleep!)

But no - we're talking about fabric - and although best wishes et al - the wishes didn't get done.  CLOSER - but not done!  (Although the Fancy Flowers WOULD have been done if I hadn't had to re-do 2 of the placemats!)

So - nothing used - but the good thing is - nothing added!  Definitely sewing (I DID finish up my blocks for my QOV and DID finish up the Fancy Flowers placemats - only have to re-do 2 of them) - but I didn't finish up everything!  In a couple of cases - close - but no cigars!

The Wanted (dreaded) Get It Done List!!!!!

Um - in January I had posted 4 DEFINITE items I wanted to get completed by the 31st - and 4 HOPED for items I wanted to complete!

                               01. January - a. Machine quilt Nathan and Lynn's Couch Quilt
01. January - b. Machine quilt Weave It to Me - this one may have been sold - not sure what pattern however
01. January - c Walking foot - stitch in the ditch - Wendy's Fancy Flowers
01. January - d Bind Threadhead mini Sampler DONE!!!

I got ONE completed!

AND I got MOST (not all) of my QOV done!  Well, at least for the top!  But then the QOV wasn't on my list either!

I also had about 3 weeks of not do a whole lot of much!

So what happened?  The Walking Foot items (Fancy Flowers) are EASY to do!  (So is the Binding after the quilting!)  But those weren't done either!

I suspect I tied back in to my old "if the person matters (and it does - my daughter and my son and daughter in law) it needs to be perfect!" way of thinking!

At this point I think I just need to GET THEM DONE!  So - guess what!  TODAY IS THE DAY! - at least for the Fancy Flowers (daughter) and the Mini-Twister (friend Peggy)!  AND I can at the least get the big Couch Quilt (son and daughter in law) READY to go!

(All this while I try to clean house, do paperwork and solve world peace!)

Wish me luck!

Oh yeah..................

FEBRUARY!!!!!!

The Un-DONE projects are now on the TO BE DONE list!  AND last month's (well - MOST of last month's) LE project has indeed evolved into a GET IT DONE project!

GET IT DONE
  1. February - Quilt the Fancy Flowers placemats, bind and send them to Wendy
  2. February - Quilt Twister, bind and send to Peggy
  3. February - Quilt the couch quilt, bind and give to Nathan and Lynn
  4. February -  Scrap Basket Blues QOV flimsy
  5. February - Samplers finished and sent
  6. February - QOV (Wendy's) finished and sent
  7. February - Christmas Ribbons (this is the old LE project - at times worked on more than the January projects last month)
HOPED for:
  1. Underground RR to be sashed and flimsy finished
  2. Quilt Baby quilt 2
  3. Tequila Buzz - aka Arizona Skies - flimsy finish
  4. Machine quilt Weave It to Me
  5. Easy Street - Flimsy Finished.

Aaaaach! There IS a mystery.......

Yes, indeed!

A Judy Lacquidara mystery, that is!  One clue posted once a month!

And guess who kept putting off the moment for finishing up Clue One!

Well, to work - to work! and finish the last dabs this morning (and post it!)!  Judy's Clue Number 2 has been published!!!!
.......................................

What's on YOUR Needles????

OK - I agree - this is the same old same old!  At least the picture (and the reality) is.  The truth is that I can only find ONE knitting needle of this size.  HOWEVEr I have not only ordered the size I needed but also another popular size of needles from LionBrand - as well as a skein of their yarn (yes - it's not Ravelry nor Loopy Ewe - which I sure wish it was - but it is a start at least!).  Unfortunately it hasn't come in yet!  Which means that I will be making a call to the major company shortly to find out when it was sent as well as the tracking number.

Meanwhile I found the most wonderful little shop - only about 3 blocks from me - that has knitting needles (and me who is a tad short of funds at the moment!!!!).  PLUS the lady there TEACHES knitting (even of how to sew socks!)  Also she (the same lady) teaches crochet, embroidery, TATTING, SPINNING, and WEAVING!!!!!

I can see that I will be sharing quilting time with some of the other lovely arts as well!

....................................
Update re needles, etc.
Yay - the company DID decide to send my card stuff through and DID send the needles to me - as of yesterday (ordered several weeks ago!)  Should be recieving this this coming week!  Hopefully!
