These Past Few Weeks....

August 1 - raining outside - I got to play with Evan this AM.  He's been ill although he is a lot better. and Lynne and Nathan are doing great too!  I've been babysitting off and on this summer - and probably will continue which is great!  Equally fun is seeing how much Evan is learning (he knows "Twinkle, twinkle little star" - sang it in his sleep for his mom at 4 AM this morning!"  He also knows how to count to 10 - IN ORDER! and can say MOST of his ABCs - and is hilarious when it comes to sounding the letters!)  He is also a little chatterbox and definitely knows his own mind!  Not bad for an almost 2 year old!!!

I also talk to Wendy almost every day - and she and I still quilt together on Skype!  She is still having problems with her Chronic Fatigue syndrome - but I think she is a LOT better than she was!  At least she is able to move around more and do more before the waves of fatigue swamp her and she almost keels over!  This is something I definitely understand - and just wish there was something I could do. Vince is doing great - and working at Wal-Mart this year in the automotive department - which is NOT easy, trust me on that!  I still want to find a way to go up there for a visit!

I had PLANNED to work in the garden for about an  hour and harvest lots of veggies!  Yup - that's what I planned to do!  Can't do it now!  Not only because I might dissolve (yeah - right!), but because wet and super humid weather can cause transmission of plant diseases from one plant to another when a person (or animal - but then I can't stop animals!), but I CAN stop me from making matters worse - a LOT worse!  And trust me, nothing like seeing a beautiful squash plant go bad overnight!  Or watch the beans which have barely come in, develop bean rust, or peppers turn to mush!  Ugh!  So I stay OUT of the garden when it is raining or wet!

Garden - this year instead of doing this at MY house (TOO much shade, lousy soil, too much shade, not enough stretching out room, lousy soil - and, oh yes - too much shade!) where my harvest dwindled to "oh really, did I indeed plant ANYTHING" to my son Nathan's yard where, with the STRONG  HELP of alpaca poop (takes care of the lousy soil problem hereabouts!), it is now - OMG the beans, peppers, eggplant, lettuce are throwing a party and we're all invited!  I have a  8 - 10' bed for green beans.  This past weekend I froze, dehydrated well over 1.5 bushel of green beans.  Lettuce - good thing I found a recipe for braised lettuce (Romaine is best for this!) - and dehydrated (after eating salad until it was coming out of my ears, trying out the braised lettuce which isn't my favorite - BUT it is still all good) almost a halfbushel of this.  This from 3 4 foot rows of seed (planted too thickly, I admit) of lettuce.  Turnips have been great!  As have cucumbers (half bushel so far - 1 plant!!!)  And the 1 Zucchini plant and 1 yellow straightneck plant - have outdone themselves.  I'm STILL dehydrating zucchini - this week - I think I will grate for future cakes.  I already have LOTS of dehydrated slabs for rollups, zucchini lasagne, etc. and will want more of the "Zoodles- (Zucchini sliced lengthwise and then like french fries - for noodles, although I KNOW they also make great zucchini french fries like that as well!  I haven't even gotten to the zucc. pickles yet - which I will probably make from some more of the slabs - sort of like I did with the cucumbers!

This coming week hopefully will also see my early potatoes come out (vines are dead/dying - it's time!), more eggplant (yum! already looking up recipes and think I will dehydrate for trying with Indian foods as well!), harvesting 1 or more of the pepper plants instead of waiting until they are all red - or gold - whichever!

LOL - on the other side of the coin - my peas finally came in - so far I've harvested ONE pea pod!  lol And I'm not sure whether they will do anything this late in the year.  Whatever critter (deer?) munched on them - I hope they gave him/her a bellyache!  Melons are still hanging in there - and just not doing a lot of much - YET!  tomatoes - ummm - a whole other story!  NEXT year - garden will be extended 1 - 2 beds more - and 1 will be ONLY tomatoes.  This year - I believed the advice that I could plant 2 plants 18" apart.  Well - that could have been true - BUT I definitely need better support than those blasted cages (which make great support for green peas, btw!)  I had 2 plants 18-24 inches apart all the way through.  Foliage was unbelievable.  Tomatoes WOULD have been unbelievable!  and then all the wire supports collapsed on each other - and I had to bite the bullet and go in and Prune the tomatoes so that I would get ANYTHING!  As it is - except for probably fresh eating, I'm going to buy in what I need - and hope I learned my lesson.  WOOD supports - 3 FEET apart with one plant per support.  No more of this 18 inch jazz!

So - this has been the major focus for a while - and will probably continue to be so for a bit!  Meanwhile - during the heat of the day and after my shower, I have been piecing and quilting up a storm.  STILL haven't gotten pix taken although I did find my camera!  Need to work on that!

Also have been trying to study in whatever non-spare moments I have - this is a great way for those of us who like to procrastinate from cleaning house! Although I AM trying to keep the apartment at least almost reasonably decent.  Almost.

Archive night on Bonnie Hunter's site!!! The First one!

Today I listened to Bonnie's Cam for 03-15-13 - WAY back when!!!!  And tried sewing some of the things Bonnie was working on! The reason for not tonight is - tonight is LIVE quilt cam - and hopefully I'll be able to join up!

Yes - I know this means I'll end up with a lot of odds and ends - but hey - I'll also end up with the truly vital pieces I need for some awesome quilts too!  Already I'm in love with the lozenges Bonnie sewed into a quilt!  And - having said no - I'm now saying "Yes! Yes! Yes!" to the lozenges!  Such a cute way to showcase the 3.5 inch fabrics!

BTW - this one I've heard (and quilted to several times!)(03-15-13, that is!)  One of my favorites!

Was a sheer delight of a day - Morning and very early afternoon - VISITING Evan, Lilly, Sean, and son Nathan (I still can't babysit - I can't trust my knee/leg AT ALL!).  Home for a short (VERY short!) nap, a trip to the paint store in neighboring CT, dropping that off, home and quilt-cam archive - and read until I fell asleep (approximately 3 1/2 minutes! LOL)  So - I got to see family, nap, drive and change of scenery, sew, read!  A very nice change of pace!  (I HAD planned on cleaning and studies - but what the hey!  Into every life a little fun must fall!)

Oh - and re pix for the last quite a few days - uhmmm - I'm having some probs uploading pix onto my blog.  Hopefully that will change as the day wears on.  Hopefully!

It's the In-Studio Spiff up night (LATE!) again! 07-29-15 and 08-06-15 - #4, #5 and #6

Two weeks worth of Bonnie's Studio Spiff up (http://institcheswithbonnie.blogspot.com/p/15-minute-studio-spiff-up_5.html)!  Mostly because I didn't publish last week!

#4 Straighten up Sewing Desk or table - where my machine is.  This one is Easy Peasy for me - since other than my current project there really is no room for me to stack anything!  Besides - IF I did stack something on the sewing desk - my cats would promptly knock it off because they view this spot as THEIR spot - and woe betide me if I appropriate that space for anything other than my current sewing project!
_________________________________

#5 The Batting collection!  Straighten it up!

But then too - my batting always seems to run neck and neck with those projects I absolutely have to finish - and what is left over isn't much! and it all fits into a box.  Actually this is the ONLY 15 minute project that is taking me less than 15 minutes to do!

#6 Straighten and organize the yardage fabric!

This one isn't too bad for me - sorta....  My fabric is already sorted by color and my yardage is separate from my FQ and scraps.  Also most (supposed to be ALL) of my fabric has been wound around my 6.5 inch ruler and then folded in half.  As a result it stacks neatly and for the most part doesn't keel over unless the fabric pile is awfully high!  Still and all, I do need to go through and straighten quickly.

No pix yet - but I'll take pix tomorrow and post!

Dust mice, threads and grit

Whatever - I love my new vacuum cleaner! (and I'm NOT going to post the NEXT line which involves a word starting with S and ending with T!)

    Bonnie's In-Studio "Spiff-up" or "Hmmm -- there seems to be a pattern developing here! " - #3

Hmmm -- there seems to be a pattern developing here!  On Wednesday's I have Bonnie's "spiff-up" - unfortunately - by the time Wednesday rolls around, I'm tired - and spiffing ANYTHING up is the LAST thing on my mind!

That being said - for the next 30 minutes I'm pretending like it is Wednesday.  After that 30 minutes are up - life can go back to being Saturday!  In fact, I would really like it to!

Bonnie's 3rd assignment (http://institcheswithbonnie.blogspot.com/2015/01/15-minute-studio-spiff-up-week-3.html) is to straighten up the FQ collection.

Ummmm - mine isn't in TOO bad of a shape - mostly because I store my FQ in plastic shoeboxes and by predominant color.  IDEALLY however, once cut into - the FQ is no longer a true FQ - and needs to move on to large hunks of scraps.  However I don't have a good system in place for that - just grocery bags where everything is jumbled.  So the cut-into FQ goes BACK into the box - hopefully with the cut side out so that I can tell I used part of it.

There is a down side to doing it this way.  For some wierd reason - I will use YARDAGE.  I will use SCRAPS.  But - I DONT seem to use the FQ - and so they linger and linger and linger!  I'm better about it than I used to be - especially since some of the quilts I've been working on DO use FQ.  However, given half a chance, I ignore the FQ and go for the scraps almost every time!

    .....
This hasn't seemed to take too long - and hopefully I will find my camera so that I can take pix of some of my FQ collections.  It isn't terribly extensive - and it would be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO easy to "just drift into the quilt shop and pick a few" now and then!  good thing that I head QUICKLY - head down, past any temptation and back to the sewing tables for class!

    Stash Report for Week 28 - 07-12-15

    2015
07-12-15 - Week 28 - AGAIN - No finishes - drat it!  Maybe today......  NOT counting new batting as fabric though!

You know how when you plan something that life has a way of laughing up its sleeve?  Yup!  It happened!  I've been in a state of grandmother delight - babysitting my grandson while my daughter in law was trying to recuperate from a combination of nasty concussion and the sinus infection from He!! !!!  Have had a wonderful time - and DID have time to actually quilt/clean house/do other stuff - if only I could have stayed awake!

I DID manage to pull out a LOT of stuff (paperwork), more paperwork, my sewing projects, more paperwork yet, and thoroughly discombobulate any and all sense of almost order that ever existed (if any!).  this week I'm trying to back track and get it all either (1) put away, or (2) more likely, stashed in any neat hiding places that I wish I had!

I DID manage to work on my sewing room though - and pictures would be wonderful - if only the world was ready for that!  Let's just say that it resembled the aftermath of a war zone! And now, after concerted effort, it has managed to de-escalate to a rather unfortunate resemblance to several major battles!

    Bonnie's In-studio spiff up (OOPS! Pretend it's last Wednesday!) - #2

#2 OOPS!  07-11-15 - Guess who forgot!  I'm going to pretend it's last Wednesday and do it TODAY!

Bonnie assigned Step 2 as the day to "Tackle your cutting space."
    >http://institcheswithbonnie.blogspot.com/2015/01/15-minute-studio-spiff-up-week-2.html<  (I would love to comment on her blog - but for some wierd reason - my computer won't let me comment on ANYONE's blog - drat it!)  At any rate - this one may take a while - mostly because I need to figure out WHERE I'm putting the stuff I take OFF of the table!

Granted - I have one of those vertical office file thingies that hang up on the wall - like they have in Dr. offices - and use that for holding  patterns - mostly applique patterns.  This HAS to sit on the table since my plaster is so old and weak that it would shatter if I tried to nail a nail into it!  I also have little trays - a cutting tool tray - has scissors, slicers, etc. in it - that I use on that table.  And I a baggie for scraps - which hangs on the doorknob right next to the table with those plastic rulers hanging right above.
My "work" door - actually a door to a closet that is extraordinarily narrow.
I use the door for sewing machine directions, paper piecing patterns,
goals, and mostly for rulers and templates that I use a LOT!
    (the 6.5 x 24" I use on yardage, an 18.5" one, a skinny little 3.5 x 12.5" and a 4.5 square)

All my other rulers sit inside the closet
hanging on hooks that are probably as old as time!
On the floor sit a craft case and my rollaway sewing machine bag.

    Table is semi-cleaned up.
You can see the plastic vertical file holder filled with quilt patterns.
You can also see the green felt covering different miniature "design walls"
that I can  toss into my sewing machine bag.  The yellow Nestle Qwik cans
I use to toss thread and snip its into and when full take them to the LQS for a
lady who makes doggie pillows from them.  We will NOT discuss the
cardboard boxes of SCRAPS hiding in various places!

My sewing machine desk - machine sits on an old cutting mat - that is warped beyond belief!
Next to the machine is the gray cutting mat that I use for quick snips as needed.
Top drawer holds all my thread - well... SOME of all my thread.  More thread is in
its own case tucked in the center open space (along with pin boxes, directions for the machine).
The bottom drawer holds 2 trays - one for scissors and slicers, the other for odds and
ends - like pencils - stuff like that!
The pictures are OLD - and so right now, my goal is to at the least get it BACK to that level of decluttering and picking up - and then figure out WHERE my problems are (as in accumulation of fabric - scraps and yardage) on the cutting table and see what I can do to resolve that!
