Retreat weekend #1

I'm scheduling this weekend as a retreat weekend - for me and anyone who wants to join me on Skype!

It starts Friday - and will continue through to next TUESDAY afternoon!

At least that's the game plan!  Anyone who complains about the dust, I will give my dustrag to!

FIRST of all - I want to finish up the Bodacious baby quilt -

Underground RR - needs sashing, borders, quilting and binding.
NOT planning on quilting just yet!

Jamestown Landing - my LE - BUT it also needs the main blocks!

Arizona Skies - aka Tequila Buzz - it's just that I like the colors - sort of like the colors in AZ!
Needs LOTS of putting together, borders and binding - not to count that at least one border is - gasp - pieced!

    Open Sew projects

This is for Jamestown Landing - my current Leader-Ender project.
NOT sure I will take this one however.  See note on Charlotte's baskets!

Charlotte's baskets - I'm going to be doing this in a variety of pastels -
or at least that's the game plan. MOSTLY though this Open Sew -
I want to work on the baskets themselves.  The reason for
possibly no Jamestown Landing is because I do have a lot of the pastel string blocks to do!

    Goals for Week 15 - WB 04-13-14

On the search for GREENS - and blues, pinks, whites, and yellows!!!
    I want COLOR!!!

                  Design Wall for Week 15 - 04-14-14

                  BINDING
I'm hopeful that today I will have finished both the Passover table runner as well as the table runner for St. Patrick's day - Optical Illusions.  If so - then I'll replace this part with pix of each.

                  QUILTING
STILL on the agenda - Passover Table Runner (ready to go) and Optical Illusions - both of which I hope to finish today!!!!

Should I finish this - then I'll probably post a REVISED design wall (machine did NOT work last week - blast it anyway!) and the following hopefully will be targeted - All About Hearts and the Snow People being worked on first THEN the Halloween and Thanksgiving table runners.

                  PIECING  - BORDERS
Celtic Solstice is up first - and just needs the borders attached.  Hopefully today.
Should this happen then the rest of this week I want to work on Holy Toledo, then on the April and May table runners (which I don't have pix of) as well as catch up on my blocks for my class - Toes in the Sand!

                  Design Wall for Week 14 - 04-07-14

                  MACHINE QUILTING
(mostly because I belong to Stashbusters UFO challenge -
and - ULP! - I moved up to #5 on the list!)

                  Bo-dacious

                  Hearts Around table runner

                  Cinnamon Stix table mat

Optical Illusions for St. Patrick's Day

                  Passover table runner

                  Snowpeople table runner

                  AND FOR MY PIECING PLEASURE....
Leader Ender string blocks for Jamestown Landing -
so far I have 50 something.  Need 168.

Celtic Solstice - STILL need to put on borders.
Having problems - but should have fixed by weekend - hopefully!

Holy Toledo - Somehow I think I need to count -
this is NOT all the blocks there are supposed to be!  Hmm!

Menues and recipes for my dd Wendy

Rhubarb - Man! sure wish it was time for Rhubarb pie!
I've been having horrible problems sending email to my dd in Canada (is this a Yahoo-ey problem???) and this from my NEW email addy (yafooey refuses to send my "clues" to the email I so blithely forgot to write down in that safe place I detest so much!) so yesterday on Skype she asked me to post on her blog.

The first is from Leanne Ely's Saving Dinner - which is a cookbook/menu cookbook/lifestyle eating plan that I dearly love!

Fish Nicoise - this I had last night - DELICIOUS!

                              3 t Tabasco sauce
3 T soy sauce, low sodium
                              6 fish fillets
                              1 T butter
                              1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
                              1/2 cup Kalamata olives
1 t garlic powder (I forgot to tell you this - and forgot it last night too!)
                              Salt and pepper to taste

In a small shallow bowl, combine Tabasco and soy sauce.  Dip the fish fillets on both sides and set aside.

Meanwhile, in a skillet, heat butter over medium high heat.  Add fish and cook 3 - 4 minutes on each side.  Remove the fish, set aside and keep warm.

Add the tomatoes and olives to the pan and saute for 1 minute.  Add garlic powder and salt and pepper to taste.  Top the fish with tomato/olive mixture and serve.

I don't remember the one I promised last week - BUT menu last week was this: (let me know which and what you are wanting recipes for)

Tuna fusilli (quite good), Skillet chicken with Spinach (quite good), Sweet bean burritos - pretty good - but then I like refried beans!, Crock-pot corn chowder - very good.

Earlier this week - I had Romano turkey burgers, Dijon Maple chicken.  Was SUPPOSED to have crock bean soup with kale - which, btw, is quite good - had it before - but I burned the daylights out of the beans so that is out until I get back to the store!

Actually - I am trying to post weekly menues on my blog - most are from one cookbook or another - let me know if any sound interesting.

Love you and sure wish I had that magic wand to make you feel better!

Bo-dacious baby quilt is now a flimsy!

Miss Button (aka Button, Button, where's my Button!) definitely approves.  I'm thinking that bright yellow is DEFINITELY a bright yellow - and do wonder how the baby will sleep with all that brightness!

However, next step will be making the sandwich, then on to quilting and binding.  However, I want to finish the Celtic Solstice flimsy first!

                              Design Wall for Week 13 - 03-31-14

This week is the same as last week (and the one before that and...... you get the idea!)  What did I work on this last week?  In terms of sewing/piecing - I worked on strips!

Most of the piecing (excepting the LE project) involves only putting on the borders.  The big project (IF I get everything else done!) is Holy toledo.  This is just piecing, mind you.  The actual quilting will be a different time.

The items to be QUILTED are pretty much straightforward and are relatively small projects.  Be aware, however, I may or may not include binding in this.

                              Bow-da-cious baby quilt

Celtic Solstice - just needs borders

Holy Toledo - needs to be re-arranged, sewn together into the center for the quilt,
then setting triangles and borders added

Stash Report for Week 13 - WB 03-30-14

Q: When does a Leader Ender take over the sewing?
                              A: When it WANTS to!

Honestly - I've had wishes and wants in terms of finishing up a bunch of projects - but definitely haven't done that (or you would see the pix!)  So - in terms of keeping some sort of mojo going, I piece some of these little do-dads every day.  Or if not piecing - then I'm pressing them, cutting to size and ooh-ing and aah-ing over how cute they are.

What am I going to use them for?  I'm working on Jamestown Landing - the strip part.  AND if I can get enough of the strips done this week, I think I will start on the HSTs - which I could do LE style - and may.

                                            Menues for Week 13 - 03-30-14

a soup I tried from one of my recipes.  Quite good - has quite a few veggies in it!
A lot (not all) of last week's menues were not used - mostly because events, refrigerator and freezer space, my bank account and the need to run to the store (what do you mean I'm out of fish??!!!) all coincided to give me a week of leftovers and some make do meals with such things as Mexican style spoon bread, entirely too many omelets (I do love omelets!), homemade chili (which I also dearly love!) and basically trying to use up all my odds and ends in different ways.  I STILL have a lot of items to use.  AND I need to clean my refrig!  So - I'll list my leftovers - then make up menues/new items from there.

                                            vegetables

                                            • lettuce - obviously needs to go in a jar with other salad fixin's.  Outside leaves get shredded and added to soup
                                            • cabbage - was supposed to be for corned beef and cabbage - forgot I'm on a salt free diet.  Yeah - right!  Cabbage goes for cole slaw, soups (cranberry cabbage soup - oh yum!), and the "refrigerator soup" that I'm making from tired veggies.
                                            • parsnips - I LOVE parsnips - although I tend to regard them suspiciously ever since my mom added the Dutch cleanser instead of salt when I was 8 yo
                                            • Butternut squash - I really like it baked, boiled - really almost anything - will make a recipe with this that I haven't tried before
                                            • eggplant - that I re-hydrated last night - but this gets used today anyway in an eggplant-cheese-tomato casserole - sort of like an eggplant parm I think - new recipe.  Would almost rather fry it I think.
                                            • carrots - coins  Also honeyed.
                                            • 2 sad mushrooms that will be gone - probably before Sunday evening - via omelet - or will appear in the goulash.

                                            fruits

                                            • apples
                                            • an orange
                                            • raisins
                                            • dried (almost desiccated) figs
                                            • Cranberry preserves - I use this instead of jams and jellies often - but this time will go with the cabbage for the sweet-sour cabbage soup (almost a borscht)

dairy - never any problem using this area up!

                                            • mild cheddar
                                            • mozarella
                                            • cottage cheese
                                            • yogurt
                                            • eggs - not really a dairy - but I generally put them here
                                            • sour cream

                                            prepared whatevers

                                            • dibs and dabs of this and that that will get used up Sunday evening.  ie, leftover hot cereals will end in a grain pudding along with any bread crusts.  May toss in an apple or two and lots of raisins and spices, rum or brandy flavoring.  Recipe - I wing it.  Has certain basics - like an egg (or 2), grain, maybe liquid if not liquid-y enough, some sweetening - usually honey although any sweetening will work
this is what is in the refrigerator proper.  the freezer has other items in it.

                                            freezer
My freezer also has frozen goodies in it - especially since this is where I put all the leftovers or those portions I saved out ahead of time (when I cook - if something has 6 portions, 4 get popped into 2 separate containers and frozen BEFORE I sit down to eat!  I still have enough for seconds this way - or for my leftover meals.)  HOWEVER this does need to be gone through now and then.

Fish - fried - and frozen.
Dibs and dabs - a serving or two for lunches at work
6 quarts of frozen homemade soups - could be chicken and rice, chili, bean soup, and I do have 2 mysterious soup containers in there to furnish a bit of adventure.

I have other things - but I'm trying to get all - or most of what I have USED UP!!!

                                            pantry

I also need to focus on using up my pasta (yay!) - which includes spaghetti, orzo, rotini, shells, mostaccioli.  Mostaccioli is easy - since I can make Hungarian goulash - using my frozen ground turkey instead of beef, and my tomatoes/peppers and other good stuff that I dehydrated - or even adding the jar of spaghetti sauce I just found in the frig door.

Another "easy" - spaghetti with veggies, sauteed and tossed in with tuna to make tuna fusilli.  And then, of course, orzo does nicely in soups - although I don't use this form of pasta often enough, while shells are my favorite to use when making mac and cheese.  Rotini I like to use in salads.  All (except orzo) are dibs and dabs and need to be used up!

                                            +6 containers frozen soup
                                            +frozen fish fillets (cooked)

                                            +Hungarian Goulash
+apple orange raisin salad - I love this!  rarely any leftovers!
                                            +corned beef and cabbage - de-salt - soak -
